Privacy policy
Last updated 1 October 2026
1. Who we are
Talkonymous ("we", "us") is an anonymous voice-call and text-chat app for adults, available on Android, and the website at talkonymous.com. This policy explains how the app and website handle information. For any privacy question, write to support@talkonymous.com.
2. What we never collect
- Your name, email address, phone number or any account login.
- Recordings of calls, or the content of your text messages.
- Your contacts, photos, files, location or precise device identifiers.
- Advertising IDs, analytics or tracking profiles. The app has no ads and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
3. Information that stays on your phone
These are stored only in the app's private storage on your device:
- Profile: your nickname, avatar choice, languages, interests and, if you choose to set it, your gender.
- Recent list: the nickname and avatar of people you've talked to, when, and for how long. Never the content.
- A random install ID: created when you install the app. It isn't tied to your phone number, Google account or hardware.
The app turns off Android cloud backup for this data, so it doesn't leave your phone. "Reset identity" in the app, or uninstalling it, erases all of it.
4. What our servers handle, and why
| Information | Why | How it's handled |
|---|---|---|
| Nickname, avatar, languages, interests | To match you and show the other person who they're talking to | Held in memory only while you're connected. Never written to disk. |
| Gender (optional) | For matching filters | Held in memory only while you're connected. Never shown to anyone. |
| Text messages | To deliver them to the person you're chatting with | Passed straight through in memory. Never stored or logged. |
| Call audio | To connect your call | Encrypted end to end between the two phones. When a direct path isn't possible, our relay server forwards the encrypted audio, which it cannot decrypt, listen to or record. |
| Scrambled install ID | To enforce bans on people who break the rules | Our server sees only a one-way hash of your install ID. It's stored only if you're banned: for the ban plus 90 days, so repeat offences escalate. |
| IP address | Needed by the internet to deliver data, and to limit abuse | Used in memory for the duration of your connection. Not logged or stored. |
| Reports you make | To protect the community | The reason you pick, kept in memory for up to 24 hours to count repeat reports. No message content is attached. |
| Call-health diagnostics | To keep calls working | Anonymous technical events (for example "call connected via relay" or an error code), with no ID, IP, nickname or content. |
5. How long we keep things
- Profile data, messages and connection details: only while you're connected, in memory.
- Reports: up to 24 hours, in memory.
- Ban records (a scrambled ID, an expiry time and a strike count): for the ban (1, 7 or 30 days, or permanently for a third ban), then 90 days so repeat offences escalate, then deleted.
- Anonymous diagnostics: kept in a small rolling log (a few megabytes) that is automatically overwritten as new events arrive, usually within days.
6. Sharing
We don't sell, rent or share your information with anyone for advertising or any other purpose. The only people who see anything are the people you talk to: they see your nickname, avatar, languages and interests, and hear or read what you choose to say.
Our servers are hosted by a cloud infrastructure provider in India, which processes data only to run the service. We'll disclose information only if a valid legal order requires it, and because we keep almost nothing, there's very little we could ever provide.
If you install the app from Google Play, Google handles the download and may collect information under its own privacy policy.
7. App permissions
- Microphone: only during voice calls. You can mute at any time, and the mic is off when you're not in a call.
- Notifications: to show an "ongoing call" notice so your call keeps running when you switch apps.
- Internet and network state: to connect you.
- Vibration: a short buzz when you're matched or receive a message.
8. Security
All connections use TLS encryption, and voice uses DTLS-SRTP end-to-end encryption. Because we don't store accounts, messages or recordings, a breach of our servers would expose almost nothing. No system is perfectly secure, but we designed this one to have as little as possible to lose.
9. Your rights
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and similar laws elsewhere (such as the GDPR), you have rights to access, correct and erase your personal data, and to withdraw consent. Because Talkonymous doesn't link any data to your identity, you can exercise these rights directly in the app:
- Access and correct: your whole profile is visible and editable in the app's "You" tab.
- Erase: "Reset identity", or uninstall. See Delete your data.
- Withdraw consent: stop using the app and uninstall it.
For anything else, or to complain, contact our Grievance Officer through the contact page. You can also complain to your data-protection authority.
10. Children
Talkonymous is strictly for people aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly allow anyone under 18 to use it. If you think a minor is using the app, report them in-app ("Seems under 18") or email us. See our Child safety standards.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date. For significant changes we'll also tell you in the app before they take effect.
